Great Offley, Hitchin, and the Local Area

Great Offley is a quiet village near Hitchin, located on the top of a chalk ridge of The Chiltern Hills that runs through the parish. The village was bypassed by the A505 dual carriageway in the 1970s, significantly reducing traffic through the village.

Great Offley and The Red Lion pub are very welcoming for both walkers and cyclists. The 152-mile Chiltern Way long-distance footpath passes through the parish, as does the 170-mile Chilterns Cycleway.

There are many places of interest in the local area including;

Great Offley has a long history; Offa King of Mercia is said to have built a palace here in the 8th-century and it is thought that he is buried, giving his name to the village. There is a group of historic buildings, including Offley Place, which was rebuilt in 1810 but which retains a Tudor porch and a 17th-century wing.

During World War II, Offley was headquarters for an Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) Searchlight unit based in Hoo Lane, that had detachments in Hitchin along Bedford Road, Chapel Foot along London Road, as well as at Whitwell and Diamond End.

In July 1944 a Lancaster bomber from 15 Squadron RAF crashed into the farmhouse at West End Farm killing the crew as well as the farmer’s wife and two daughters (one of whom was home on leave from the Auxiliary Territorial Service).

Great food, friendly atmosphere My wife and I live in the village and decided to try the Red Lion after excessive waiting times at 2 other pubs in surrounding villages (1 hour, hour and a half).I ordered a cajun chicken burger and my wife ordered a plain burger. Both were absolutely delicious with tasty home made chips, onion rings and an extremely delicious homemade coleslaw. Lovely surroundings and good food in a village pub with a lively, but not overbearing, atmosphere. Extremely enjoyable evening.

Friendly village pub with great food Popped in mid week with the dog for some drinks and food. I had the burger and my partner had the ribs (off the special menu) + starters. The food and service were great. The quality of food and portion sizes were excellent and the staff really really friendly. Highly recommended and very dog friendly.

Excellent Now under new management and what a difference! Cleaned up, spruced up and a whole different vibe.Food was excellent. Everything was homemade, home cooked. It's so difficult to find a pub these days that cooks it's own food and doesn't rely on pre-packed food like so many of the chain pubs.Highly recommend.

A lovely getaway We booked into The Red Lion yesterday. First impressions are everything. Situated in a very quaint rural area, with access to both between Luton and Stevenage, The Red Lion is a hidden gem.We were extremely happy that we managed to book a room a few hours before arriving. Joe was very helpful and helped us out massively. The area is wonderful for those who love a spot of peace and quiet. The pub itself holds ample seating and parking. A warm welcome was made by all, which is exactly what you want when entering an establishment. We had a few drinks, then ordered some food. The Jerk Chicken Skewers were unreal. Four huge skewers of chicken, tomato and pepper served with a lovely crisp fresh salad. We also ordered the ham and cheese flatbread, which too was very generous serving and tasted as good as it looked.The room was lovely for a couple. A fridge with juice and milk was lovely along with two choices of cereal. A walk in shower in the bathroom, which was upstairs, which made it feel like you was in a flat, was a nice touch. Would deffo recommend to people. Prices for both the room, food and drink are very competitive. The staff are friendly with owners who are so welcoming.

Wonderful village pub What an amazing gem of a place. Stumbled across this lovely pub whilst out walking visiting the area for the first time. Staff could not have been more helpful, food was excellent and the pub full of charm. A family run pub, with quirky features, a warm welcome, and met the lovely owners who really made the effort to make our visit a great experience. Also lovely outdoor areas and even have accommodation too. Would definitely stay here on our next visit. What more do you want or need, and in a gorgeous village too. Highly recommended!

Fun, friendly and filling! Fantastic pub, we left full and smiling having had great chats with all the staff. The potato skins are to die for and the mains were all great (we had the Cajun chicken and 2 steaks)

Pubs don’t get better than the Red Lion in Offley! Best night ever. Lovely staff, service on another level, amazing food beautifully presented and freshly prepared. I am a major fan of Caesar salad and if it’s on the menu it’s a must have! 11/10 and you do not need a side dish!! I didn’t even want a bite of my fiancé’s burger or steal a chip! It’s cozy, cool and highly recommended!
